NWW Writing Weekend 25th - 27th July 2014

Friday 25th July 2014 will mark the beginning of the 2nd North West Words Writing Weekend in Letterkenny. I attended and thoroughly enjoyed this three day event last year, and I'm looking forward to a similar experience this summer. It's great to have such an opportunity so close at hand in the North West in two lovely venues - Radisson Blu Hotel, and Cafe Blend, Letterkenny.

The following is a description of the three day event with activities for all sorts of writers - fiction, poetry, and writing for children.

Workshops from Mia Gallagher, Gerard Smyth, Malachy Doyle, Susan Millar DuMars, Kevin Higgins and Averil Meehan. For further details and bookings of the entire weekend, or individual workshops email Maureen Curran at: maureenwcurran@yahoo.ie

Workshop Descriptors:
In Writing for Younger Readers Malachy Doyle will lead a session for those who are interested in writing for children. Through writing exercises and discussion, he'll help to give you a clearer idea of what's needed and what's involved.

In Fiction: Getting Started Susan Millar DuMars will demystify the process of moving from the urge to write to actual writing – pen to paper, fingers to keyboard, whatever you fancy. We will explore various techniques for beginning a new piece or reviving one that’s stuck. There are no prerequisites for this workshop, apart from the desire to write stories.

The challenge of flash fiction is writing a complete story of fewer than 1000, or 500, or 300 words. In the workshop Averil Meehan will look at examples of flash fiction and discuss what works in them. Writing prompts will be used for participants to write their own flash stories. Lastly we will examine markets for this popular form. This workshop is for both beginner and more experienced writers.

Kevin Higgins’s workshop Writing New Poems is for beginner poets, those who’ve had poems published in magazines, and everyone in between. The aim of the workshop is to get each participant working on at least one brand new poem. Kevin will use a pre-existing poem by a published poet as a writing prompt for the session.

When the poet Na was asked "Where do you get ideas to write?" she responded - "Where do you not?" Gerard Smyth’s Poetry Workshop will explore where, among the plentiful imagery of the world, we find our poems and how we develop the craft of making those poems. As a long-time published poet who is also an editor, Gerard Smyth will also offer advice on sending out poems and what editors look for.

In Writing the Best Fiction You Can, Mia Gallagher helps fiction writers identify strengths and weaknesses so they can bring their work to a publishable standard. Through exercises and feedback on participants’ work, we’ll explore choices around character, plot/action, structure, voice, tone, wording and layout. We’ll see how these choices reflect your intention and affect the reader and we’ll explore ways of strengthening them to create a more powerful and meaningful impact.
